Is an Online Degree Valid in India?

Updated October 2026 · Based on the university's published information

Yes. An online degree is valid in India when the university is entitled by the UGC to run that programme online for your admission session. Under UGC's 2020 regulations on open, distance and online programmes, such degrees are treated as equivalent to on-campus degrees for jobs and higher studies. The check takes five minutes.

Online MBA

Is an online MBA valid?

  • An online MBA from a UGC-entitled university carries the same standing as a regular MBA degree from that university.
  • The degree certificate is issued by the university; some mention the mode of study, which UGC permits.
  • Employers and universities abroad may run their own credential checks (for example WES); several Indian online universities state WES recognition.
  • Professional programmes such as engineering, medicine, law, pharmacy and architecture cannot be studied online.

How to check if an online degree is valid

  1. Open the UGC-DEB website (deb.ugc.ac.in) and find the list of higher education institutions entitled to offer online programmes.
  2. Select your admission session (for example, 2026–27) and find the university.
  3. Confirm the exact programme (for example, MBA, online mode) is listed, not only the university.
  4. Check the university's NAAC grade on the NAAC website.
  5. Apply only on the university's official portal; you will create an ABC ID and a DEB ID during admission.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is an online MBA valid for government jobs?

UGC treats online degrees from entitled universities as equivalent to conventional degrees. Individual recruiters set their own eligibility, so check the job notification.

Is an online degree valid for higher studies?

Yes, for admission to further study in India, subject to the admitting institution's rules. For study abroad, the foreign university or a credential evaluator decides.

Does the degree certificate say "online"?

Some universities mention the mode of study. UGC rules allow this and it does not change the degree's validity.

How do I know a university is UGC-entitled?

Check the UGC-DEB list of entitled institutions for your admission session at deb.ugc.ac.in.

Is online better than distance?

Both are valid. Online usually offers live classes and online exams; distance is usually cheaper with centre-based exams.

Is an online degree equal to a regular degree?

Yes, if the university is entitled by UGC to offer that programme online. Under the UGC (ODL and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, online degrees from entitled universities are treated as equivalent to regular degrees. Check the programme on the UGC-DEB website before you pay.

Can I study this while working full time?

Yes. Online programmes are built for working learners, with recorded lectures, weekend or evening live sessions and online exams. Plan for about 8–12 hours a week.

How do I get the brochure and the latest fee sheet?

Fill in the form on this page or message us on WhatsApp at +91 79800 06284. A Gradify counsellor shares the university brochure, fee sheet and EMI options during working hours (Mon–Sat, 10 AM–7 PM).

Does Gradify charge anything for counselling?
